Mammoth Mountain opened earlier than scheduled thanks to a major storm that dumped nearly 3 feet of snow at its higher elevations this week.
The resort opened for the 2015 and 2016 season on Thursday, six days earlier than planned. Opening day lift tickets were being offered at a discounted rate of $50 — nearly half of what one usually costs — as the mountain was only partially open.

Three lifts — Broadway Express, Facelift Express and Discovery Chair — would be open on Thursday, allowing skiers and snowboarders to access Saddle Bowl, Broadway, Andy’s Double Gold and Sesame Street, according to Mammoth Mountain’s website.
The resort announced the earlier-than-expected opening Tuesday on its Facebook page.
“Godzilla El Nino showed up early and in true Mammoth fashion, we’re opening in TWO DAYS,” the post stated.
The lifts would be open Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., according to the website.
Mammoth Mountain received 30 inches of snow at the top of the mountain, and 12 inches at Main Lodge, a separate Facebook post read.
