Authorities have safely removed a 250-pound female bear from a Sylmar neighborhood after she was spotted roaming the campus of Los Angeles Mission College and the surrounding residential area on Monday morning.
The Los Angeles Police Department initially responded to a report of a bear sighting at a golf course in the area, an LAPD sergeant at the scene told KTLA. Officers responded and residents were told to stay inside their homes.
The bear was on the loose of the campus of L.A. Mission College, located at 13356 Eldridge Ave., when Sky5 first arrived overhead shortly before 11 a.m., aerial video showed.
Soon after, the large animal crossed the street and began wandering through a residential neighborhood.
Personnel from the California Department of Fish and Game responded and used a tranquilizer dart on the large animal, the LAPD sergeant said.
Just before 11:10 a.m., the animal appeared unsteady and stumbling in the middle of a street near multiple police patrol units. A short time later, she appeared motionless on the sidewalk.
The bear was loaded onto a truck and would be safely placed back into the wilderness, according to LAPD.
