An off-duty law enforcement officer was transported to the hospital Monday evening after he was shot in Harbor City.

The shooting happened around 7:05 p.m. on the 23300 block of Dorset Place and was described by authorities as a family dispute.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that the unnamed law enforcement officer is a sheriff’s deputy who was not working at the time of the shooting.

The deputy was shot in the upper body and is currently listed in stable condition. He is a 10-year veteran of the force who is assigned to the Century Station, LASD said.

One person was detained as part of the investigation; authorities say he appears to be a family member.

A handgun was recovered at the scene and everyone involved in the incident, including the gunman, has been cooperating with the investigation, police said.

It’s unclear at this time if the shooting took place inside or outside of the residence and investigators are working to determine whom the firearm belonged to.

The gunman, who police say lived at the residence, was expected to be booked into jail Monday night. The case will be forwarded to the County District Attorney’s Office to determine if charges will be filed, police officials said.

The investigation is ongoing.
