A Hesperia mother and stepfather were arrested for allegedly torturing a 4-year-old girl who had multiple physical injuries and had ingested a toxic substance, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department stated Friday.

An emergency referral to authorities from children and family services at Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital was made Tuesday after the girl was admitted for ingesting a toxic substance and was found to have “non-accidental” injuries.

Her mother, 29-year-old Jamie Updegraff, and 31-year-old stepfather Jake Updegraff were arrested for willful cruelty to a child, failure to provide care to a child, torture and causing great bodily injury during the commission of a felony.

The couple was booked at the Central Detention Center.
