Sheriff’s deputies were on the scene Friday of a shooting and hostage situation unfolding at a home in Pico Rivera.
The incident began as a search for a parolee wanted for a variety of felonies, according to Nicole Nishida with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
During the search, the parolee broke into a home in the 9000 Block of Rosehedge Drive, Nishida said.
When deputies found him, they tried to get everyone else of out the house, according to officials at scene.
At that point, deputies said the parolee started shooting and they returned fire.
During the gun battle, the man who lived at the home, identified by neighbors as Frank Mendoza, was shot.
The deputies were able to pull Mendoza out of the line of fire, but he did not survive his wounds.
Following an hourslong standoff, the suspect, identified as 24-year-old Cedric Ramirez, was later shot and killed after a deputy-involved shooting, according to the Sheriff’s Department.
