Police on Friday were looking for a hit-and-run driver after a man in a wheelchair was struck and left to die on the side of a road in San Bernardino.

The 62-year-old victim was found Thursday at about 9:18 p.m. lying on Cajon Boulevard near North Western Ave. (map) with a damaged wheelchair nearby, according to a news release from the San Bernardino Police Department.

Emergency crews determined from the victim’s injuries that he had been struck by a car. The man, whose identity was not initially released, had died a short time before rescuers arrived at the scene, according to the news release.

Investigators believe the man was traveling on the roadway in his wheelchair when he was struck by the vehicle, which was moving at a high rate of speed, police stated.

The driver fled the scene without calling 911 or stopping to aid the victim, according to the news release.

Anyone with information about the incident was asked to contact Officer Antonio Silva at 909-384-5791.
