A woman reported hearing a man scream for help near the the 1400 block of Pacific Coast Highway (map) around 6:30 a.m., Santa Monica Police Department Sgt. Rudy Flores said.

The injured man was found near tire tracks, but it was unclear what hit him.

“The person said that he was hit by a vehicle. We tried to get more detailed information as far as where this occurred, he was not able to give us that information,” Flores said.

A lifeguard vehicle did not hit the man, lifeguard officials said.

It is not uncommon for vehicles to cross a nearby barrier dividing a parking lot from the restricted beach area, officials added.

The incident comes five days after a sunbather was struck by a lifeguard SUV at Venice Beach.

In May a 49-year-old woman was hospitalized after being run over by a maintenance vehicle in Venice Beach, and in February another maintenance worker’s truck ran over a man lying on the beach in Long Beach.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Santa Monica Police Department at 310-458-8491.
