A palm tree burst into flames early Christmas morning in Mid-City area of Los Angeles, sending embers flying down the street as high winds roared through the region.
Los Angeles Fire Department firefighters responded to the blaze shortly before 3 a.m. near Venice Boulevard and South Mansfield Avenue (map).
The fire was extinguished in about 20 minutes, according to a freelance news cameraman who shot video of the cascading red embers.
No one was available Thursday morning at the Fire Department’s media relations desk to provide information on the cause of the fire.
The visually stunning fire came as high winds blew across Southern California due to a cold front that moved into the area Wednesday night.
Power was out for nearly 12,000 Los Angeles power customers at about 6:30 a.m. Thursday. That figure was lowered to about 7,200 within two hours.
