A 24-year-old woman suffered major injuries after falling to the bottom of a waterfall in the San Bernardino National Forest, officials said Monday.

Brittany Vidaurri, of Highland, went for a hike with friends and family in the Forest Falls area known as Big Falls (map) about 4 p.m. Sunday afternoon, according to a news release from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.

As she was climbing near a waterfall, Vidaurri fell to the bottom and suffered major injuries, the Sheriff’s Department stated.

Emergency workers responded and determined Vidaurri would need to be hoist rescued from the bottom of the waterfall.

Vidaurri was lifted out of the area by Sheriff’s Air Rescue 6 and taken to a nearby trauma center for treatment, according to the news release.
