A San Bernardino man is dead after he succumbed to a gunshot wound sustained near a homeless encampment, authorities said, and the hunt is on for his killer.

Robert Martinez, 45, was found by San Bernardino Police Department officers at Hillside and Conejo drives just before 3 p.m. Wednesday. He was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, which assumed the investigation, said Martinez was shot “near a homeless encampment northeast of Hillside Drive,” according to a release.

Officials identified the location as a “county area of San Bernardino,” and it appears to be an area outside city limits, according to county records.

The shooter has not been identified and remains at large, deputies said.
