A 28-year-old man who died after being caught in a rip current off Malibu’s Zuma Beach was identified Monday by the L.A. County coroner’s office.

Jose DeJesus Garcia, of Sun Valley, died Sunday after he disappeared into the water while lifeguards worked to rescue people who were struggling to swim in 6-to-8-foot surf around 3:45 p.m.

Garcia was spotted by a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department helicopter crew around 5:05 p.m., Capt. Kenichi Haskett of the Los Angeles County Fire Department’s Lifeguard Division stated.

Fire personnel performed CPR on Garcia, but he was pronounced dead around 5:15 p.m.

Officials initially said the swimmer was 29 years old, but the coroner’s office said Garcia was 28.
