A powerful storm caused major flash flooding in the San Bernardino County community of Twentynine Palms over the weekend.

According to San Bernardino County Fire Protection District officials, the “significant storm event” led to multiple flash flood warnings being issued for the area, and the rain caused a spike in weather and water-related incidents on Sunday.

Many stranded locals had to be assisted or rescued during the course of the storm, officials said.

Between 2 and 6 p.m., local authorities were involved in three swift water rescues; 11 people were helped from submerged or disabled vehicles, and 10 people were treated for various injuries, all within Twentynine Palms city limits.

Video and photos posted to social media show the aftermath of the flooding; footage from inside a local residence shows water gushing in through a doorway, and photos taken outside show incredibly damaged roadways that look more like shallow rivers.

Officials also urge residents to know the difference between emergency alerts:

  • Flood watch – Be prepared, flooding is possible
  • Flood warning – Take action; flooding is happening or will happen soon
