A transient was charged Monday, and faces up to 7 years in state prison, after allegedly attacking an 11-year-old boy outside downtown L.A.’s Walk Disney Concert Hall, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
Raul Villalba Ocampo, 33, was charged with one count each of assault with a deadly weapon and child abuse, the DA stated. The criminal complaint also alleged he used keys as a “deadly and dangerous weapon during the commission of a crime.”
The allegations come after an 11-year-old boy was attacked while on a school field trip to the Walt Disney Concert Hall last Thursday.
During the attack, Ocampo was accused of grabbing the fifth-grader by the neck and slashing him with a set of keys.
The boy had “very minor cuts” on his neck after the “light assault,” and he was hospitalized as a precaution, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department officials said the day of the attack.
“He’s a trouper,” sheriff Lt. Bob Killeen said of the boy.
The attacker was detained quickly, likely saving the boy from further injury, the lieutenant added.
Ocampo was taken in for a mental health evaluation after the assault, the results of which were not known.
He pleaded not guilty and faced a preliminary hearing on Dec. 24.
If convicted as charged, he faces a maximum of 7 years in state prison, according to the DA.
