An orphaned sea otter pup has received a permanent home just weeks after being found stranded on Carmel Beach by storm waves likely caused by El Niño, according to the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
After unsuccessful attempts to reunite the pup with her family using her cries, rescuers were able to nurse the 4-week-old pup back to health, the aquarium stated on its Facebook page.
Now, Pup 719 — as she was temporarily being called until named — has found a new home at the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago where she continued to thrive.
The once fragile pup now weighs 11 pounds and was receiving around-the-clock care from surrogate moms who will teach her the skills sea otters need to survive, according to the Shedd Aquarium.
