Officials at Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital in Valencia are raising money for two fathers who survived a fiery Gorman crash that killed their families this week.
Two mothers and four children were killed Tuesday when a minivan that was rear-ended by a big rig erupted in flames on the southbound 5 Freeway in Gorman.
After it was struck by the big rig, the minivan rolled down the embankment with its driver-side door jammed. The two fathers tried to rescue their family members through the sliding door on the passenger side but the flames were too intense.
The men, identified by the Associated Press as 34-year-old Aaron Hon Wing Ng of San Francisco, and 45-year-old Wei Xiong Li of Daly City, and were taken to the Valencia hospital with burns and other injuries after the crash.
Henry Mayo will be matching all employee and physician donations and will be disbursing the funds equally to each family once the campaign has ended, according to the GoFundMe page.
“Many of our employees and our physicians have been very touched by this experience and wanted to do something to help with mounting expenses and funeral costs,” said Marlee Lauffer, a spokeswoman for the hospital, in an email.
