The shooting was reported about 10 p.m. at the corner of Via De Anza and Lasselle Street, across the street from Rancho Verde High School, the Press Enterprise reported.

A verbal altercation occurred, shots were heard and a male in a white van was struck by the gunfire, the newspaper reported.

The vehicle then crashed about two miles north of the school.

The victim was not a student and no students were involved, said Deputy Armando Munoz of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

No one was in custody after the shooting.

A football game took place at the school Friday night, but it is unclear if the shooting was related to the game, according to the Press Enterprise.

Greg Burks and his family were walking to their car after the game Friday when a fight broke out and police had to intervene, he told KTLA.

“A bunch of gunfire erupted, we ran up here and jumped into the bushes,” he said.

He then saw the white van take off from the scene.
