An 18-year-old man who was injured in a shooting after a high school football game in Moreno Valley Friday later died at a hospital, officials said.

The shooting was reported about 9:55 p.m. Friday when shots were heard near Rancho Verde High School, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

The Press Enterprise reported that an argument broke out and a man in a white van was was shot.

The van then crashed near Lasselle Street and Iris Avenue, about two miles from the school, according to the newspaper.

Responding deputies arrived and found evidence of the shooting at the intersection of Via De Anza and Camino San Simeon.

Additional deputies were flagged down where the van crashed and a vehicle was taking the victim to the hospital.

Desean Welch, 18, of Victorville, was taken to Riverside University Health System in Moreno Valley, where he died, officials said.

The victim was not a student at the school and no one from the school was involved in the shooting, Val Verde Unified School District officials said in a statement.

Many students and parents were leaving the stadium parking lot when the shooting occurred and students were “quickly pushed back onto campus.” School officials responded and secured the area until law enforcement gave the all clear, the statement read.

The shooter was described as a black man about 20 years old with a medium build and remains at large.
