A man who escaped from the California Institution for Men in Chino was located Monday night after being on the run for nearly 24 hours.
The City of Chino Police Department confirmed on its Facebook page that 33-year-old Michael Garrett escaped from the Chino men’s state prison Sunday night.
Garrett’s disappearance was discovered that night around 9:15 p.m. when he was not accounted for during an inmate count, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) stated in a news release Monday.
After state investigators received information that Garret was at a Vons at 453 Santa Fe Drive in Encinitas, deputies with the San Diego County Sheriff’sDepartment responded and found him standing in front of the grocery store, CDCR said.
He was taken into custody and was being transported back to the Chino prison, officials said.
Encinitas is about 70 miles south of Chino.
Garrett was serving a four-year eight-month sentence for first-degree burglary, vehicle theft and attempting to evade an officer while driving recklessly, the CDCR stated.
He was admitted into the California Institution for Men in October 2017 and would have been eligible for parole in October 2019, according to a CDCR inmate search.
No details on how Garrett escaped the prison were immediately available.
