A man died Saturday night after he grabbed onto the passenger door of his vehicle when someone got inside and tried taking off, dragging his body against the ground, according to authorities.

Just before 8:3 0 p.m., deputies responded to the scene in the 4400 block of Redondo Beach Boulevard where they discovered the victim had left his car running when he walked into a business, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said in a news release.

As he was walking toward the business, police said, someone got inside the vehicle and tried driving it away, according to officials. Then, the victim was dragged for a couple hundred yards before falling off.

He was taken to a nearby hospital when he was found to be suffering from head trauma and was later pronounced dead, officials said.
