Peggy Green has been going to the Crenshaw United Methodist Church in L.A.’s Baldwin Hills/Crenshaw neighborhood every Saturday for the past three years, passing out dozens of boxes filled with food.
“I started coming up here because I needed it,” Green said. “It’s for people who really need the help and at the particular time, I was struggling like a lot of us do.”
Every Saturday at 12:30 p.m., volunteers pass out boxes of food to about 40 families in need — and they say the demand is growing.
“I drive from one store to another store and fill up as much [food] as I possibly can and bring it here to the church,” said Pastor Royce Porter.
The packages are made possible through donations.
“I’ve never experienced this in my entire life, of how many people are in need of food,” Porter said. “I don’t want anybody leaving the church empty-handed at all.”
