The estate of singer Sinead O’Connor demands that former President Donald Trump stop using her music at his campaign rallies.
Recently, her hit song “Nothing Compares 2 U” was played at Trump’s political rallies in Maryland and North Carolina.
When her estate and label, Chrysalis Records, caught wind of this, they demanded it be pulled immediately and issued a joint statement.
“Throughout her life, it is well known that Sinéad O’Connor lived by a fierce moral code defined by honesty, kindness, fairness and decency towards her fellow human beings. It was with outrage therefore that we learned that Donald Trump has been using her iconic performance of ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ at his political rallies.”
The statement then touched on how the Irish singer would have felt about the move.
“It is no exaggeration to say that Sinéad would have been disgusted, hurt and insulted to have her work misrepresented in this way by someone who she herself referred to as a ‘biblical devil.’ As the guardians of her legacy, we demand that Donald Trump and his associates desist from using her music immediately.”
The singer was always outspoken on political matters, from Irish unification to sexual abuse in the Catholic church. During a 1992 performance on “Saturday Night Live,” O’Connor ripped up a photo of the pope on live television in protest.
O’Connor died last year at 56 years old after she was found unresponsive at her London home in July.
Authorities pronounced her dead at the scene, and a coroner later ruled that she died of natural causes.
The singer’s estate joins the list of many artists who have called on Trump to stop using their songs; among the others on the list include Rihanna, Neil Young, Linkin Park, the late Tom Petty and Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler.
