March is NATIONAL READING MONTH, a month to motivate people of all ages to read every day.

In addition to municipal and county libraries, there’s the Los Angeles County Arboretum’s PLANT SCIENCE LIBRARY, a library most people don’t know exists! It contains an extensive collection of publications specializing in the history of the L.A. Arboretum, Southern California gardening, Botany, native plants, environment, water, birding, and more! Plus, the facility contains extensive research material and information that cannot be found online!  

The library is open to L.A. Arboretum members and the public with paid admission.

This exhibition is a vivid journey through the art of comics and visual storytelling across Asia. From its historical roots to the most recent digital innovations, the exhibition looks to popular Japanese manga and beyond, highlighting key creators, characters, and publications.

Los Angeles philanthropist and entrepreneur Bernard Kinsey is talking about THE KINSEY AFRICAN AMERICAN ART AND HISTORY COLLECTION, an outstanding exhibition at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood.

The inspired work of Bernard and Shirley Kinsey, and their son Khalil, is considered one of the largest and most comprehensive of its kind.

Curated by Khalil Kinsey and historian Larry Earl, the exhibition focuses on the lives, and accomplishments from the 16th century through the years of slavery and emancipation to the civil rights movement and modern-day.

Luna Luna: Forgotten Fantasy

It’s what the art community describes as “the world’s first art amusement park.” It’s Luna Luna: Forgotten Fantasy, built in Hamburg, Germany in 1987 featuring celebrated artists Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, David Hockey, Roy Lichenstein and more. It lost its funding and disappeared. Well, it’s back and we can experience this amazing and unusual art and amusement park creation inside two huge Los Angeles warehouses. Puppeteer Bob Baker, the creator of the oldest children’s theater company in Los Angeles. His legacy lives on with the Bob Baker Marionette Theater classic “Magic Strings.”

California State University, Northridge’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Clinic in the David Nazarian College of Business and Economics is offering free tax preparation assistance to low-income families and individuals, including non-English speakers, people with disabilities and veterans, beginning Monday, January 22nd through Monday, April 15th at CSUN and more than a dozen satellite locations throughout Los Angeles County.

The CSUN VITA Clinic is staffed by IRS-certified student volunteers and is available to taxpayers six days a week at a variety of locations, including in CSUN’s Bookstein Hall; Las Palmas Park and San Fernando Public Library in San Fernando; Sun Valley Public Library; Valley Plaza Branch Library in North Hollywood; Grandview Library in Glendale; Mid Valley Regional Public Library in North Hills; Pacoima Public Library; Panorama Public Library; Goldwyn Hollywood Regional Library and the nonprofit Inclusive Action for the City in Los Angeles. A complete list of locations, date and times can be found on the clinic’s website.

Here are the guidelines for this unique program:

   *The clinic accepts walk-ins, but it is highly recommended that taxpayers schedule an appointment through the VITA website.

   *A list of documents and forms of identification taxpayers must bring to their session can be found on the website.

   *The maximum gross income limitation per tax return has been set at $64,000.

More than 300 CSUN student volunteers complete intensive training on handling federal and state tax returns. Aside from tax preparation, some of the students are trained to serve as financial coaches to the taxpayers at the clinic.

In addition to providing service to the community, the CSUN VITA Clinic also gives students an opportunity to gain firsthand knowledge and experience in their field of study, and an opportunity to give back to the community.

 

Launched in 1970, the CSUN VITA Clinic is housed in the Bookstein Institute for Higher Education in Taxation, located in the Nazarian College. The clinic aided more than 8,500 low-income taxpayers in 2023, generating more than $8 million in refunds to low-income taxpayers and $2.8 million in federal tax credits.

Actors are not the only ones garnering Academy Award attention! There are the people responsible for the costume designers and their teams responsible for the wardrobe we see on the actors in our favorite movies.

Costume designer Ellen Mrojnek and her team are nominated for an Oscar for the wardrobe featured in the movie “Oppenheimer” and there’s costume designer Jacqueline Durran and her team nominated for the wardrobe featured in the movie “Barbie.”

The ASU FIDM Museum website says we can see all five of the Oscar nominated costumes — and more — at the ASU FIDM Museum in downtown Los Angeles location. Admission is FREE!
