Sky5 video showed a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department helicopter hovering over the location where the men were found, more than 12 hours after their ordeal began.

Assisted by a deputy who descended by rope, the men were individually hoisted up to the helicopter before being whisked away to the nearby Eaton Canyon Nature Center.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Altadena Station received a call at 5:40 p.m. Wednesday from one of the two 24-year-old men, according to Deputy Daniel Page. The caller said the pair were “O.K.” but had become lost.

The men, described as fit but inexperienced hikers, were believed to have started their hike about 12 p.m., Page said.

About a dozen search and rescue personnel, supported by two helicopters from the Pasadena and Los Angeles police departments, attempted to find the men throughout the night.
