California among 5 states with decrease of new COVID-19 infections as world hits 40M cases

The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases across the planet has surpassed 40 million, and that number will keep climbing as the United States enters a third peak, generating more than 50,000 daily virus cases.

In the U.S., some states are trying more targeted measures as cases continue to rise across the country. New York’s new round of virus shutdowns zeroes in on individual neighborhoods, closing schools and businesses in hot spots measuring just a couple of square miles.

On Friday, new confirmed cases climbed over the 70,000 mark — a total the country hasn’t seen since the middle of July. Additionally, the U.S. seeing cases rise in 45 states, according to a New York Times tracking tool, with many of the biggest surges in the Midwest and Great Plains. Deaths per day were climbing in 30 states.

But five states, including California, are seeing a decline in the number of new coronavirus infections.

The Golden State’s average of 3,039 new cases per day marks a decrease of 7% from the average two weeks earlier. California recorded 2,862 new confirmed cases Saturday, according to the state’s Department of Public Health.

As the nation experiences a 30% increase in confirmed cases, here’s a look at the states that are seeing the highest and lowest percentage increases in COVID-19 cases:
