Authorities have identified a Navy sailor killed in Tuesday’s chain-reaction crash involving military trucks on a Southern California highway that injured five other service members.
Aaron Michael Fish, 26, died in the pileup on southbound Interstate 5 near Oceanside, the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office said in a statement Wednesday.
Fish was an active-duty member of the U.S. Navy stationed in Oxnard and had been driving one of the five trucks involved in the collision, the statement said.
The crash occurred as the convoy began to slow, causing one of the truck trailers to be pushed into its cab, killing the driver, the California Highway Patrol said Tuesday.
A sailor in his early 20s was rushed to a hospital with severe injuries and four other service members, two women and two men in their early 20s, were hospitalized with minor injuries, according to KTLA sister station KSWB in San Diego.
The Highway Patrol and military officials are investigating.
