One lane reopened Monday morning after an overnight rockslide left a portion of Pacific Coast Highway closed in both directions through Malibu Monday morning.
“I need you guys to make a U-turn and go back the other way. PCH is closed. It is not going to be open for walking or driving,” a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department patrol unit was heard shortly after the slide, which occurred around 11:30 p.m. near Big Rock Drive.
Caltrans used a front loader to clear the highway Monday morning but the closure remained in place as rocks continued to tumble down the hill during the early morning hours.
“It absolutely is going to affect your morning commute because they are not sure how long this closure is going to last,” KTLA reporter Erin Myers said at the scene.
Motorists were advised to take alternate routes and avoid the area Monday morning.
One lane was reopened around 9 a.m., the Sheriff’s Department stated in an update.
“That lane will be used to alternate eastbound and westbound traffic,” The update stated.
This closure comes on the heels of recent storms and mudslides this season that resulted in shutdowns on other stretches of road in Malibu.
Malibu Canyon Road has been closed and reopened multiple times after February downpours caused a massive slide that was captured on video.
The February storms also caused closures on separate portions of PCH.
