Man who fired gun at school bus killed in Buena Park police shooting: Officials

A man who opened fire on a school bus was chased and fatally shot by police in Buena Park Friday, officials said.

The incident began just before 2 p.m., when an officer on patrol saw the man shooting at a bus in the area of Orangethorpe and Western avenues, Buena Park police said in a news release.

The location is near St. Pius V Catholic School, but police did not say which school the bus belonged to.

The officer tried to pull over the vehicle the man was in, but he fled, and a pursuit ensued across surface streets in the area.

The driver then pulled into a parking lot for the Buena Park School District at 6885 Orangethorpe Ave., where two police officers opened fire on him, officials said.

The man was fatally struck and died at the scene.

Investigators say a gun was recovered at the scene. But it wasn’t immediately clear if the man was armed during the shooting, or what prompted the use of lethal force.

Aerial footage of the scene showed police vehicles surrounding a white utility pickup in a parking lot that was blocked off for investigation.

Investigators with the Orange County District Attorney’s Office are handling the investigation into the deadly police shooting.
