A gunman was on the loose after a deadly shooting near a school in Cudahy Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.

The gunfire was reported at about 2:50 p.m. on the 4700 block of Clara Street, outside the baseball diamond at the Elizabeth Learning Center, according to Los Angeles County sheriff’s officials and footage of the scene.

The victim, a 27-year-old man, died at the scene, deputies said. Aerial video showed his body lying on the sidewalk outside the baseball field.

The violence broke out while students were still on campus, said sheriff’s Lt. Scott Hoglund.

Elizabeth Learning Center is a public pre-K through 12th grade school with about 1,795 students, according to its website. Children walking home said they saw the body on the ground.

The shooter was clad in a hooded sweatshirt when he approached the victim and fired several rounds. He then got into the passenger side of a light-colored sedan that fled west on Clara Street, the Sheriff’s Department said.

Deputies believe the victim was the intended target, but a motive behind the killing remains unclear, Hoglund said.

Homicide investigators were continuing to investigate Tuesday night.
