Los Angeles police detectives were investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 1-month-old infant in South L.A. early Wednesday, authorities said.
The baby’s mother called 911 after going into the infant’s room and finding him or her unresponsive, according to Det. Juan Perez with the Los Angeles Police Department’s child abuse unit.
When officers arrived at the residence in the 200 block of East 97th Street (map) around 3:40 a.m., they discovered the baby had died, according to LAPD Sgt. A. McGee.
It was not immediately known how the infant died, and a cause of death would be determined by the L.A. County Coroner’s office.
No physical trauma was found on the baby and the death hasn’t been ruled “suspicious,” McGee said, adding police haven’t taken anyone into custody.
Perez said his unit responds to the “all deaths of children under 11 years old.”
Investigators remained at the residence as of 8:30 a.m., video from the scene showed.
