Two people have been arrested in connection with an altercation and shooting in Isla Vista that left both of the alleged assailants and two UC Santa Barbara students injured, authorities said on Tuesday.
The shooting occurred in front of a residence in the 6500 block of Sabado Tarde Road just before 7:15 p.m. on Monday, a news release from the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office stated.
According to investigators, 19-year-old Jose Guadalupe Gutierrez and 22-year-old James Joshua Taylor went to the residence of two male UCSB students where an altercation subsequently occurred.
At some point, the students “sustained what is being characterized as gunshot wounds,” the release said, adding that a handgun was recovered at the scene.
One sustained a wound to the abdomen, while the other had a “through and through wound” to the chest, according to the release. Both students were transported to an area hospital and were expected to survive their injuries.
Following the fight, residents subdued and held Taylor until law enforcement personnel arrived at the scene, but Gutierrez got away, sheriff’s officials said.
As a result of the incident, UCSB dorms were placed on lockdown and residents in the area were urged to shelter in place while authorities searched for a male suspect who fled the scene, a campus alert stated.
The orders were lifted at about 9 p.m.
Gutierrez was later arrested after investigators discovered he had checked himself in at a hospital for treatment of injuries that authorities believe he sustained during the altercation, the news release stated.
Taylor was also injured and taken to a hospital for injuries that were not considered to be life threatening.
Both suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident, investigators said. They remained hospitalized Tuesday morning and have not been booked at Santa Barbara County Jail yet.
Taylor was booked in absentia on charges of attempted murder, robbery, discharge of a firearm in the commission of a felony causing great bodily injury, and participation in a criminal street gang, according to the release.
Gutierrez was booked in absentia on the same charges as Taylor plus a charge of possession of a stolen firearm, the release said.
The incident occurred less than a year after a deadly shooting rampage in Isla Vista claimed the lives of 7 people and left 13 others injured.
No further information was being released about the latest shooting because of the ongoing nature of the investigation.
