The solo-vehicle collision involving a two-door Mercedes Benz occurred shortly after midnight on the eastbound 118 near the De Soto Avenue offramp, the CHP’s incident log stated.

Two people were inside the vehicle at the time when it landed upside down. The drop was approximately 75 feet, according to a CHP officer at the scene.

Both of the car’s occupants were pronounced dead at the scene.

The bodies were not immediately identifiable, a CHP official said.

A dog that was also inside the Mercedes survived the crash and was taken to a local animal shelter, CHP Officer McCallister said.

The California Highway Patrol issued a SigAlert shortly after 2:30 a.m. and the De Soto offramp was closed for an unknown duration, the log stated.

It remained in effect until shortly after 10 a.m., more than an hour after crews pulled the mangled wreckage of the black vehicle back up to the roadway.

The cause of the collision was under investigation.
