Two drivers were in critical condition and the northbound 110 Freeway was closed in San Pedro after a big rig crashed into a car, leaving it crushed under the truck’s trailer Tuesday.

The crash was reported shortly after 2 p.m. at the Gaffey Street entrance to the 110 Freeway, according to Erik Scott of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

A big rig’s tractor and trailer separated and were a quarter-mile apart, Scott said. The trailer was on top of the passenger car, a black Hyundai that appeared crushed, photos from the scene showed.

Rescuers extricated both drivers and transported them to hospitals in critical condition, Scott said.

All northbound lanes remained closed in the area — near the beginning of the northbound freeway — as of 4:30 p.m., according to CHP’s incident log. Two southbound lanes were temporarily closed.

The crash was initially reported as involving two big rigs.

The Fire Department referred calls for details to the California Highway Patrol, which could not provide more information.
