Thirteen people were hospitalized after a traffic collision in Cabazon on Friday, officials said.
The crash involving a Greyhound bus and a second vehicle occurred just before 11 a.m. on the eastbound 10 Freeway near Malki Road, according to CAL FIRE and the Riverside County Fire Department.
The Greyhound bus carrying 33 occupants was traveling from Los Angeles to Phoenix, Arizona, California Highway Patrol said.
The bus was going eastbound on Interstate 10, east of Ramsey Street, within the city of Banning. The Greyhound was traveling at approximately 60-65 mph in the #2 lane, when it suffered a tire failure to the left front tire, CHP said.
The bus driver then lost control and veered to the left, colliding with a Mitsubishi Outlander SUV that was in the #1 lane, the agency said.
Then the bus struck the center divider wall and came to rest in the center median.
Eleven occupants of the bus and two occupants of the Mitsubishi were transported to local area hospitals. One occupant of the bus suffered a major, but non-life-threatening injury. All other injuries were minor, CHP said.
Authorities had initially said about 20 people were transported to area hospitals for further treatment of varying injuries.
The uninjured passengers of the bus were taken to the Morongo Tribal Hall at 11555 Potrero Road in Cabazon.
It was not yet clear what caused the crash, though it did occur in a construction zone.
Always remember to reduce speeds in construction zones, CHP reminded drivers.
