Twenty-one students have been suspended from a high school in Chino Hills amid an investigation into an alleged hazing incident involving members of the football team, officials said.
The suspensions, ranging in length from one to five days, were handed down after multiple students reported the incident, which was said to have occurred at the team hotel during an away-game trip to St. George, Utah, according to Julie Gobin, spokeswoman for the the Chino Valley Unified School District.
A representative from the hotel in Utah told KTLA they were unaware of any incident and that local police were not called.
Details of the alleged hazing were not immediately disclosed, but several students told KTLA that the incident involved members of the football team attempting to sexually assault a freshman player with a foreign object.
Some students claimed that the alleged incident was a joke that was being blown out of proportion by administrators.
The district investigation was ongoing.
“Something occurred that rose to the level of hazing” Gobin said. “We have zero tolerance for hazing or bullying of any sort.”
