Two people have now died following a three-car crash in Porter Ranch Saturday evening, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
The crash was initially reported as killing one teen and injuring nine other people, six of them critically, according to authorities.
Shortly after 5:30 p.m. Saturday in the 11000 block of North Reseda Boulevard, a 2007 Honda CRV headed southbound on Reseda Boulevard crossed over the double yellow lines and hit a car headed northbound, then careened into another car in the northbound lanes, police said.
A parked car was also damaged in the crash.
A tragic situation was exacerbated by a Sunday morning announcement from police that a second juvenile, one of those injured on Saturday, died from her injuries.
The teenager who was declared dead at the scene, identified by his family and Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner as Magnus Joseph Robinson, was 16 years old, though authorities initially said he was 17. A GoFundMe has been set up to collect donations for his family.
Ivaan Narvaez, Robinson’s uncle, said the teen’s death is a “tragedy,” as his nephew was “a very caring person, very, very loving.”
“I can’t imagine how people process something like that,” said Narvaez. “This is a very, very difficult situation, and I can’t imagine how his mom is feeling at the moment.”
While the identity of the person who died on Sunday has not yet been released, the LAPD said she was a 14-year-old girl.
Authorities say the two teens who died were riding as passengers in the CRV, which is believed to have been traveling at a high rate of speed when the crash happened.
“It’s a little heartbreaking that you have the family members here and you have crisis response here speaking with them,” said Lt. Matt Bielsky of the LAPD. “For those of us who have families, it is tough to see this all the time. And we’ve been doing this many years and every time, it is tough dealing with the family members and what they have to go through. We just ask that everybody slow down, especially now that it’s drizzling and the rainy season is coming up, so just please slow down.”
As for the driver of the CRV, he is hospitalized and is expected to face charges once he is released from the hospital.
The occupants of the two other involved vehicles are all expected to survive.
