Firefighters responded about 6:34 a.m. to a report of a Christmas tree fire outside the hotel, which is located in the 600 block of Anton Boulevard, Fire Department Capt. Chris Coates said.

Plumes of thick, gray smoke were visible from the freeway and surrounding areas, including City Hall, a photo tweeted out by the Fire Department showed.

Firefighters arrived on scene about two minutes after the initial call and reported that the tree was “pretty much destroyed,” Coates said.

They knocked down the flames and prevented the blaze from spreading to nearby structures, according to the captain.

It was unknown what sparked the destructive fire, which was under investigation. No injuries were reported.
