The return of Robert Durst to face murder charges in Los Angeles will be delayed for at least five days as New Orleans authorities determine how to handle lesser allegations related to possession of a firearm and marijuana.
The 71-year-old real estate scion, who is implicated in the murder of a friend and the disappearance of his wife, appeared briefly in a New Orleans courtroom Tuesday, shackled and wearing an orange prison jumpsuit and rubber sandals over bare feet.
In Los Angeles, Durst is charged in the killing, more than 15 years ago, of local writer and filmmaker Susan Berman, whom he had known since college. Durst also is a suspect in the disappearance of his wife Kathleen in 1982. Durst was acquitted of murder charges in a third incident from 2001, in which he admitted to killing and dismembering a neighbor.
The case became a national sensation as it played out in an HBO documentary. In the program’s final episode on Sunday, Durst uttered a possible confession after the filming stopped but his microphone continued recording.
