A person has been arrested in connection with a road rage incident in Jurupa Valley that left a 55-year-old man dead, authorities announced Sunday.
Few details were available about the arrest, which was confirmed by Deputy Michael Vasquez of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.
The violent altercation that led to the death of Jerry Lakes occurred Jan. 4, according to the department. Deputies responded at 4:30 p.m. to a report of two males fighting at the intersection of Avenue Juan Bautista and Skyview Road (map). The deputies arrived within minutes, but the two drivers had already left the scene.
Hours later, one of the men, identified as Lakes, checked himself into a hospital, the Sheriff’s Department said Jan. 18 in a news release. The Jurupa Valley resident complained of pain received during the fight. Lakes’ medical condition deteriorated and he succumbed to his injuries Jan. 12.
Officials from the sheriff’s Central Homicide Unit and Jurupa Valley station then took over the investigation.
The other driver involved in the altercation was described as a Hispanic man in this 30s driving a light colored Jeep Liberty.
At a traffic checkpoint on Jan. 18, sheriff’s personnel distributed fliers that described the incident and urged witnesses to come forward.
