One person was killed and nearly a dozen others injured Wednesday when a car ran a red light and plowed into a group of pedestrians outside a church in Redondo Beach, police said.
The crash occurred around 8 p.m. at Pacific Coast Highway and Vincent Street in front of St. James Catholic Church.
A woman in a white car driving north on PCH ran a red light at the intersection of Vincent Street, striking a group of pedestrians, according to Lt. Joe Hoffman with the Redondo Beach Police Department.
The woman kept going and ultimately collided head on with a second vehicle, said Sgt. Shawn Freeman.
A third vehicle also became involved when one of the pedestrians was knocked into the air and smashed into the windshield of a passing SUV.
At least one adult was confirmed dead, according to Hoffman.
Several of the pedestrians suffered life-threatening injuries and were transported to a number of area hospitals in critical condition, he said.
At least two of the victims were children, Hoffman said.
The victims were leaving the church after attending an elementary school Christmas pageant, according to witnesses at the scene.
The driver was detained by police and was later booked on suspicion of felony DUI and vehicular manslaughter.
The California Highway Patrol closed PCH from Emerald to Diamond streets until 2 a.m. due to the crash.
