Investigators were trying to determine the cause of what was initially believed to be a gas explosion at a home in the community of Muscoy in San Bernardino County that killed one person and left two others in critical condition.
Fire crews responded around 6 p.m. to a home in the 3300 block of Gray Street (map). Nearly a third of the structure was leveled, firefighters said.
The body of a man was discovered inside the rubble of the home, according to San Bernardino Fire Department spokeswoman Tracey Martinez.

A second man and a woman suffering from burns and blunt force trauma were both transported to Arrowhead Regional in Colton, Martinez said.
Fire officials initially described the cause of the explosion as a possible gas leak, but crews from the Southern California Gas Co. ruled out natural gas as a possible cause, according to company spokeswoman Angela Fentiman.
There was also nothing initially found to indicate that the explosion was the result of a drug lab, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.
Arson and bomb squad units were still at the location late Wednesday investigating what officials were then describing as a crime scene.
Neighbors described the home as more of a shed than a house.
