Homicide Detectives Investigating Discovery of Man’s Body Near Shore in Playa del Rey: Authorities

Sheriff’s homicide detectives responded to a scene in Playa del Rey on Sunday after a man’s body was found on a rocky jetty in Ballona Creek, authorities said.

Human remains were initially reported to have been found about 7:19 p.m. near the 6100 block of the Ballona Creek Bike Path, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The unidentified man was pronounced dead at the scene, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement.

Deputies, lifeguards and coroner’s officials were also summoned to the location, where the creek empties into the Pacific Ocean. The scene is near the Ballona Wetlands Ecological Reserve.

Upon arrival, authorities cleared the immediate area of bicyclists and pedestrians, many of whom were outside to watch Sunday evening’s lunar eclipse.

A coroner’s investigation was expected to determine the manner of death.
