Driver of allegedly stolen Kia leads deputies on multi-city pursuit

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department pursued an allegedly stolen vehicle through multiple cities Tuesday morning, eventually taking the driver into custody after about 45 minutes.

The silver Kia Soul was taken from the Compton area, sheriff’s officials said, and the pursuit began around 6:50 a.m.

The vehicle spent time on surface streets in Compton, Bell Gardens, Commerce, Montebello, Rosemead and Pico Rivera while being pursued by multiple law enforcement vehicles.

Through residential areas and a parking lot, the Kia driver managed to evade deputies.

Around 7:25 a.m., the driver pulled into a Walmart parking lot, parked in a handicap spot and tried to enter the store, which was apparently closed. Deputies tried to corner the Kia in the parking lot, but the car was able to escape.

Five minutes later, however, the driver entered a dead end in South El Monte, where he was trapped by LASD vehicles. He surrendered to authorities after a few moments.

Police have not identified him.
