A black Honda led authorities on a chase through southeast Los Angeles County Friday afternoon following a failed traffic stop in Upland.
The pursuit began shortly after 12 p.m. in the 100 block of East Foothill Boulevard when an officer tried to pull the car over for an alleged equipment violation, the Upland Police Department told KTLA.
But the driver fled and continued to drive along freeways and side streets as Sky5 was overhead.
Upland police handed the pursuit over to the California Highway Patrol.
Around 1 p.m., the suspected pursuit driver was in the Norwalk area on the northbound 605 Freeway. Sky5 captured a passenger also in the car opening the vehicle’s door, getting out and then getting back in.
During the chase, the suspect driver weaved in and out of traffic at high rates of speed, ran several red lights, and drove on the wrong side of the road, as seen in footage from Sky5.
At one point, CHP moved into “surveillance mode” because the suspect was driving too erratically.
A law enforcement helicopter was following the suspect driver from the air, and a few ground units were following a block or so behind.
By 1:30 p.m., authorities were no longer on the ground. The driver and passenger exited the car and appeared to try to get into a parked truck, but then they ran back to the black Honda and drove away.
In the South Gate area, the car appeared to hit some cars while in traffic. In Cudahy, the driver got out of the car and tried to get into a parked car. A person also approached the suspect driver and handed him a bag.
The suspect driver made his way to the southbound 710 Freeway in Bell, where he got out of the car. The driver and passenger were seen running up an embankment along the freeway and approaching a big rig in an attempt to get in.
The big rig driver managed to drive away.
The suspect driver and passenger continued to walk along the freeway and then got into the back seat of a black Nissan Sentra. After driving for a few minutes, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department appeared on scene and the suspects and passenger opened the car doors and tried to run away from deputies.
Both men were ultimately seen being taken into custody around 2:20 p.m.
