A person is dead and a police officer was hospitalized following a shooting in Azusa Wednesday afternoon.

The shooting happened around 3:55 p.m. on the 1000 block of West Gladstone Street, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Officials said officers were responding for a report of a stolen vehicle. When they arrived on scene, police found the vehicle as well as a man and a woman near it.

As officers approached, the man took off on foot and police chased after him, police said. The officers attempted to bring him into custody but a struggle ensued.

Police said the man pulled out a gun and began shooting. One of the officers on scene returned fire and fatally struck the suspect.

A responding officer was struck in the lower torso and was taken to the hospital for injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening. The officer underwent successful surgery and is in stable condition, officials told KTLA.

Paramedics treated the suspect on scene but he died as a result of multiple gunshot wounds.

The suspect has been identified only as a white man between the ages of 25 and 30. Police said his handgun was recovered at the scene. The second suspect, the woman who was found near the stolen vehicle, was taken into custody.
