One of the two teen boys shot during a street takeover in the Vermont Square neighborhood of South Los Angeles early Saturday morning has died, police said.
The boys, both 15, were at the takeover near 54th Street and Western Avenue at about 12:40 a.m. when they spotted what appeared to be a robbery in progress, the Los Angeles Police Department said in a news release.
Police initially said the boys themselves were the victims and were robbed of their jewelry, though on Monday, police identified the victim only as “an individual.”
As the suspects fled the scene of the apparent robbery, they fired shots at the boys, striking them both, police said.
The boys took themselves to a nearby hospital. One boy, listed as being in critical condition, was transferred to another medical center, where he succumbed to his wounds.
The other boy remains hospitalized and is in stable condition.
Anyone with information about the shooters is asked to call detectives at 323-786-5100.
