The Los Angeles Police Department will have its first Asian-American chief starting in March.

The Police Commission announced that Assistant Chief Dominic Choi will take the reins at the beginning of next month, though only on an interim basis.

“Choi, the son of Korean immigrants, will be the first Asian American to head the agency when he begins his role on March 1,” the Associated Press reports.

Current Chief Michel Moore plans to step down at the end of this month, and Choi has previously been acting chief when Moore was unavailable, the Los Angeles Times reports.

“In picking Choi, the Police Commission went with an experienced insider who has held a variety of roles as he ascended the department’s ranks, from internal affairs investigator and homeless coordinator to Moore’s chief of staff,” the Times added.
