Two California Highway Patrol officers in the San Francisco area were being credited Tuesday with helping to save the life of a suicidal woman poised to jump from the Bay Bridge.
Officers J. Maya and D. Ribergaard were called in following a report of a possibly suicidal woman who had climbed over the railing of the eastern span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, according to a post on the Facebook page of the CHP in San Francisco.
Both officers tried to talk to the distraught woman, but received limited responses, the post stated.
Then, Officer Maya borrowed a strap from a Caltrans bridge tow truck and tied one end around himself and the other end to the bridge railing, according to the post.
Maya, who was also trained in crisis intervention, then climbed over the railing himself and tried again to talk to the woman.
Eventually, he was able to convince her to come back over the railing, the post started.
The woman was taken to St. Francis Hospital for a mental health evaluation, according to the CHP.
