Costa Mesa Apartment Building Evacuated After Tree Falls, Causes Roof Collapse

A tree that toppled into a Costa Mesa apartment building is shown in a photo tweeted by the city Fire Department on Sept. 21, 2015.

A 24-unit apartment building in Costa Mesa was evacuated Monday after a large tree fell onto the structure, and four units were red-tagged.

The roof of the building collapsed when the tree toppled onto it, the Costa Mesa Fire Department stated on Twitter.

The agency responded to the building, in the 1300 block of Adams Avenue, about 11 a.m. The tree appeared to have destroyed at least one unit’s outdoor balcony.

The evacuation was completed before noon and no injuries were reported.

Only one of the buildings at the complex — Pine Creek Village — was seriously impacted, fire Chief Fred Seguin said. The eight-unit building saw four apartments red-tagged, he said.

The age of the tree and windy weather could have played a role in the tree coming down, Seguin said.

A manager at the complex said displaced residents were being put up in a hotel.

Authorities initially described the building as having 32 units.
