The Costa Mesa Police Department has arrested the person believed responsible for a man’s murder late Monday night.

The victim was found lying on the sidewalk near Sterling Alley and Pomona Avenue around 10:45 p.m.

The man was shot multiple times, police say. Officers administered first aid at the scene until paramedics arrived to take him to a nearby hospital where he later died.

He was identified by police Tuesday as Jonathan Ray Valdez, 38, of Costa Mesa.

The Police Department released information about the deadly shooting early Tuesday morning, asking the public for any information that leads to an arrest.

By mid-afternoon, police provided an update in which they announced that an arrest had been made.

Ryan Rosas, a 20-year-old Costa Mesa resident, was identified as the suspect in Valdez’s slaying. Rosas was arrested by detectives and is expected to face charges for homicide.

Police also recovered a weapon that was believed to have been used in the crime.

The crime is believed to be an isolated incident, police officials say, and the investigation is ongoing. Detectives are asking anyone with information about the shooting to come forward by contacting either Detective Kris Moore at 714-754-4986 or Sgt. Jose Morales at 714-754-4933.
