A man and a woman out with their grandchildren survived a dangerous ordeal Thursday morning when a gunman fired at their vehicle during an attempted robbery in Lancaster.
The shooting occurred as the couple and two toddlers were leaving the Stater Bros. in the area of 20th Street East and East Avenue J (map) at about 12:15 a.m., according to Lt. Velasquez of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
They were approached by two men in their 20s who attempted to rob them, Velasquez said.
“He tried to pull the door open and I overpowered him and then they shot a gun right through the window. Shot right into the car and I had both my grandkids in there… my wife… it’s just really unfortunate,” the grandfather, who wished to remain unidentified, said.
No one was struck by the gunfire, but some shattered glass did cause minor injuries to the grandfather, according to Velasquez.
Authorities were searching for the two men, who fled the scene without taking anything, Velasquez said.
They were believed to be driving a white Honda Civic or a light gray Pontiac Grand Prix.
